When all is said by Anne Griffin. Just finished this

When all is said by Anne Griffin.
Just finished this and it was the perfect read for holidays. I read it on the tran, train, bus, plane, cafe, bar and playground!
The main character, Maurice really affected me. His voice made me tear up many times.
This is a story of what happens when you regret much of your life. We are being asked to love Maurice despite his failings and asked to forgive him for the last chapter.
I'm really impressed with this novel, the writing is easy to read yet poetic in places. It's a beautiful idea for a tale and the author's command of the plot is to be commended. Well done. Well done. When all is said by Anne Griffin.

Current short story read is Nicole Flattery’s debut collection, Show

Current short story read is Nicole Flattery's debut collection, Show them a good time.
Loving the title, cover, artwork and the general feel and pacing of her writing.
Nicole has so much to say, she observes meticulously. This is not a collection to be devoured.
I'm taking my time to read, every sentence is a story and those sentences have to get time.
I've read the first 3 stories, really enjoyed the opening story of the collection, Show them a good time but am noticing her protagonists, so far, are of one and the same type.
This might be a strength or other!
Either way, her writing, her thoughts, her style, her everything are genuinely fresh and genuinely dark and genuinely quirky. It can be easy to dub a book "dark" but I think that term needs to be carefully weighted and selfishly given.Current short story read is Nicole Flattery’s debut collection, Show them a good time.

Can we trust new writing? Is it any good? Reading

Can we trust new writing? Is it any good?
Reading an old collection of short stories from Alice Munro. I've finished and loved the first two. They are both masterpieces and not a stroke is out.
I've discussed modern writers and established writers at length with a friend of mine. He reckons that we can trust writing by dead or established writers. Writers like Raymond Carver and Alice Munro or Joy Williams. I agree to a point. I read contemporary and established writing but I find it's usually the established writers that I am most moved by. I am less moved by contemporary writing though that's not to say it doesn't happen. Kevin Barry, Danielle Mc Laughlin and upcoming Nicole Flaherty's collection intrigue and fascinate me.
Clare Keegan told me once she only reads dead writers. What do we think?

Stone mattress, 9 wicked tales by Margaret Atwood. Am making

Stone mattress, 9 wicked tales by Margaret Atwood. Am making my way through this nightly. I think some writers are just suited/more brilliant or natural to the longer form of the novel and Atwood is one of them.
Short stories are hard.
The best story of this collection is the title of the collection, Stone mattress. .
