Can we trust new writing? Is it any good?
Reading an old collection of short stories from Alice Munro. I've finished and loved the first two. They are both masterpieces and not a stroke is out.
I've discussed modern writers and established writers at length with a friend of mine. He reckons that we can trust writing by dead or established writers. Writers like Raymond Carver and Alice Munro or Joy Williams. I agree to a point. I read contemporary and established writing but I find it's usually the established writers that I am most moved by. I am less moved by contemporary writing though that's not to say it doesn't happen. Kevin Barry, Danielle Mc Laughlin and upcoming Nicole Flaherty's collection intrigue and fascinate me.
Clare Keegan told me once she only reads dead writers. What do we think?
