It’s Irish Book Week amd here’s my much loved labyrinth in Galway City. It’s Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop. It rambles up and down steps and into second book areas, children’s books, journals and any new book you could think of. It’s kinda am institution and I insist you visit.

Irish Book Week kicks off today until 3rd November.
Books upstairs in Dublin City is my favourite bookshop. It now has a beautiful coffee shop upstairs with cool views. They regularly host poetry and fiction readings and champion the emerging to the more commercially successful writers.
Bookshops, to me, should be staffed by people who read books(a no brainer, you might think but I’ve been in ones where book staff had not heard of Carver) and who are not up their arses.
Sorry to be vulgar but reading and selling books shouldn’t make anyone feel superior. The owners and staff of Books Upstairs are book lovers and friendly without pushing books on you.
They recently pushed their bookshop through to the other shop next door. The children’s section is full of quirks.
They sell a big range of lit mags, bookmarks, book loot etc as well as books!
Next time you’re in need of a book, don’t say you didn’t know!

I always see the value of having someone to read my writing and give me help, support and push me on.
I’m ultra fortunate that this guy, brilliant author and rock dude, Peter Murphy is writer in Residence in Carlow till December!
He reads work so carefully and really has given my writing the focus it needs. Go raibh.

On plausibility in writing fiction. It is plausible because it should or needs to be true not that it could be true.
It’s complex reading but it means a lot to character writing and helping gain a reader’s trust.

Story v plot. Plot is everything. I usually revel against planning when I write but I think things are leading me to sit and plan. Am reading about plot lines and how they matter hugely not only with readability, reader’s interest but in helping the writer come up with fresh ways to spin the yarn.

Astley Book Farm, Nuneaton, West Midlands, England.
I’ve visited many bookshops in every place we go to but this place was simply the best shop for book lovers!
It’s all second hand. The owner told me she only buys good books and I saw this throughout. The fiction section is huge. All of Carer’s books were there along with any short story writers you may wish for! The well known and the lesser.
I picked up some great ones. Angela Carter, Carver and Roald Dahl to name some.
The shop is a neat and atmospheric labyrinth including a caje filled cafe, fabulous gardens to sit, read, eat, drink coffee and a Retro Shed for retro home buys.
If you’re in the Midlands, you need to go. In fact I’d suggest even if you live in Ireland you need to fly to Birmingham and drive up for the day!

Most anticipated read this summer or year for me! Non – fiction seems to be shedding the memoir sometimes negative connotation. I’ve started reading this. It’s very true.
