Just getting into it. This book was let free at the recent Festival of Writing and Ideas in Borris. It's not in shops yet. I'm getting stuck in. It's full of short paragraphs and sentences so far. Plus lots of fun Kevin Barry style.Night boat to Tangier, Kevin Barry.

If reading doesn’t affect our lives, doesn’t change us or

If reading doesn't affect our lives, doesn't change us or influence our behaviour, it is no more than a pass-time entertainment... Aidan Chambers.

What do you think of this statement?
Is it slightly poncy or elitist?
Is it true?

Does not every type and genre of book change you in some way?
Is being merely entertaining enough, do we always need an emotional, intellectual, ethical effect after reading?

A book(even if read for a entertaining or pleasure seeking hobby) should cause us to think, all about who we are, where we came from and what we want to be?If reading doesn’t affect our lives, doesn’t change us or influence our behaviour, it is no more than a pass-time entertainment… Aidan Chambers.

Into the woods by John Yorke debates censorship in art.

Into the woods by John Yorke debates censorship in art.
He says"Censorship removed psychological truth and replaces it with denial, wish fulfilment and propaganda. It makes for neither better drama or better psychology. Pretending the world isn't cruel may be far more damaging for children than showing that it is."
I think the cleaning up of fairytales is a shame. Children are able to take in all sorts of characters and dilemmas through the safety net of a book shared with teachers or parents. There is no point sheltering children to the bad or good parts of life. Sheltering only causes low self resilience and coping skills.

When all is said by Anne Griffin. Just finished this

When all is said by Anne Griffin.
Just finished this and it was the perfect read for holidays. I read it on the tran, train, bus, plane, cafe, bar and playground!
The main character, Maurice really affected me. His voice made me tear up many times.
This is a story of what happens when you regret much of your life. We are being asked to love Maurice despite his failings and asked to forgive him for the last chapter.
I'm really impressed with this novel, the writing is easy to read yet poetic in places. It's a beautiful idea for a tale and the author's command of the plot is to be commended. Well done. Well done. When all is said by Anne Griffin.
